Fifth Grade at Holy Cross Academy is a wonderful year! In Religion, we learn about the founding fathers, God's choice of Moses as a leader for His people, and finish off the year with the miracles of Jesus. Social Studies has us following the growth and development of the United States from early Native Americans to the Reconstruction period after the Civil War. In Science, we perform many experiments and observations to learn about: Plants; the Solar System; Light and Sound; Energy, Work and Machines; and the Earth.
Our Language Arts curriculum is very complete. The Open Court Reading Series is fantastic because it encourages students to "think beyond", requiring them to step up to more analytical thinking. Students also complete a study of a novel each grading period. These books include: Owls in the Family, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Sign of the Beaver, and Crash. Students become tremendous writers as they analyze and encourage each others writing during our Writing Groups. Students become adept at Grammar and Punctuation through many practice activities throughout the year.
Our Saxon Math program keeps students current on Math skills with constant review on concepts learned. Students learn more advanced multiplication and division, and manipulating fractions in a variety of ways. Our focus is also on understanding how to set up Algebraic equations for real life situations.
All of our academics are taught within a climate of Christ-like behavior for our students, making the atmosphere within the 5th Grade classroom safe, and encouraging.
